How to multitrack record an Allen & Heath CQ

Last checked

Short answer. Set Stream Mode to Multitrack, then plug the CQ's square USB-B port into a computer or iPad. Every input arrives on its own track, in order: input 1 on track 1, input 2 on track 2. The CQ-12T sends 16 tracks (10 inputs plus 3 stereo pairs you choose), the CQ-18T and CQ-20B send 24. A Mac needs no driver. Allen & Heath staff say an iPad works too; we haven't tested an iPhone or iPad yet. With no computer, the CQ records every channel to an SD card.

Quick start

  1. Set Stream Mode to Multitrack. Go to CONFIG, then Digital Audio, then USB/SD. Without this, you get only 2 tracks. (Recording settings)
  2. Pick the sample rate on the same screen: 48 kHz is the safe choice (our advice). Set your recording app to the same rate.
  3. Plug the USB-B port into your computer or iPad and open a recording app. (Ways to record)
  4. Arm the tracks. Input 1 is on USB 1, input 2 on USB 2, and so on. The main mix is on the last 2 tracks. (USB routing)
  5. Check the Source Point on the USB/SD screen. It decides how much of the channel's processing (gate, EQ, compressor) ends up in the recording. (Tap points)
  6. Record a 30 s test and play it back before the show.

New to this? The words used here, such as tap point, class compliant and virtual soundcheck, are in the glossary. Other mixers are in the mixer recording guides. Facts come from Allen & Heath's help pages unless a line says otherwise. The sources are at the end.

Ways to record a CQ

To a computer over USB

Plug the CQ's square USB-B port into the computer. Then record in any recording app (a DAW).

  • CQ-12T: 16 channels to the computer, 16 back.
  • CQ-18T: 24 channels to the computer, 22 back.
  • CQ-20B: 24 channels to the computer, 24 back.
  • Sample rate: 48 or 96 kHz, on all three.
  • Bit depth over USB: not stated by Allen & Heath.
  • The port: USB-B, USB 2.0, class compliant (works without a driver). Allen & Heath: "Class compliant USB-B interface."
  • Mac: no driver needed. Allen & Heath: "CQ mixers are Core Audio compliant on MacOS so no driver is required."
  • Windows: install Allen & Heath's Windows driver (called ASIO). It keeps the delay low.

With no computer: to an SD card

The CQ records every channel by itself to a full-size SD card in its SD slot.

  1. Go to HOME, then RECORD, then Multitrack.
  2. Arm each channel you want.
  3. Press Record in the transport bar.
  • CQ-12T: 16 tracks (10 inputs plus 3 stereo pairs you choose), at 48 or 96 kHz.
  • CQ-18T and CQ-20B: 24 tracks at 48 kHz, or 16 tracks at 96 kHz.
  • Files: one mono 24-bit WAV file per channel, named by channel number and name, such as 03SnrTop.WAV. They go in a folder under AHCQ\USBMTK.
  • Length: a file stops at 4 GB, about 8 hours at 48 kHz or 4 hours at 96 kHz.
  • The card: use an SDHC card of 32 GB or less, marked UHS-I and Class 10. Format it in the CQ first: HOME, then SYSTEM, then USB/SD.
  • A slow card records fewer channels. The record screen shows "Armed X of Y" so you can see how many fit.
  • A USB stick records only stereo. The USB-A port takes a FAT32 stick and records a 24-bit stereo WAV of the last stereo pair (the main mix out of the box), up to 4 hours at 48 kHz.
  • SD and the USB stick can't run at the same time.

To an iPhone, iPad or Mac with an app

A Mac works like any computer above, with no driver. For an iPad, Allen & Heath staff on its forum say: "CQ's USB-B audio interface is class compliant, so yes, it can be used with an iPad." Class compliant means it works without a driver. Allen & Heath doesn't name the iPhone. We haven't tested an iPhone or iPad with a CQ yet. See Mac, iPad and iPhone below.

CQ recording settings

All the recording settings are on one screen: CONFIG, then Digital Audio (the symbols tab), then USB/SD.

  • Stream Mode: pick Multitrack to record every channel. Stereo sends only one stereo pair.
  • Sample Rate: 48 or 96 kHz. This one setting covers USB-B, the USB stick and the SD card.
  • Source Point: how much channel processing goes into the recording. See Tap points.
  • Channel Assignment: what goes on the last few USB channels. See USB routing.
  • Bit depth over USB: not stated by Allen & Heath. Files on the SD card and the USB stick are 24-bit.
  • File format on the mixer: WAV only.
  • Clock: nothing to set; the CQ uses its own (our reading).
  • Changing the rate later: an SD recording made at 48 kHz won't play back while the CQ is set to 96 kHz, and the other way around.

Only 2 channels? Set Stream Mode to Multitrack

If your app sees only 2 channels, Stream Mode is set to Stereo.

  1. Go to CONFIG, then Digital Audio, then USB/SD.
  2. Set Stream Mode to Multitrack.
  3. Unplug the USB cable and plug it back in, so your app sees the new channel count (our advice).

Allen & Heath's help text: "Set to Stereo for streaming or recording with mobile devices that do not support multichannel audio devices. Set to Multitrack for multichannel recording to and from a DAW." An iPad needs Multitrack to see more than 2 channels, Allen & Heath staff say. We'd use Multitrack on an iPhone too (our advice).

CQ USB routing

Recording every input? There is nothing to patch. Each mono input goes to the USB channel with the same number, and you can't change that. Allen & Heath: "CQ input 7 is being sent to USB channel 7."

What reaches the computer:

  • CQ-12T: USB 1-10 are inputs 1-10. USB 11-16 are 3 stereo pairs you choose.
  • CQ-18T and CQ-20B: USB 1-16 are inputs 1-16. USB 17-24 are 4 stereo pairs you choose.

The stereo pairs you choose:

  1. Go to CONFIG, then Digital Audio, then USB/SD, then Channel Assignment.
  2. Pick a source for each pair: a stereo line input, an FX unit, the main mix (Main LR) or one of outputs 1-6.
  • The last pair is the main mix out of the box. Allen & Heath: "The last stereo pair is set to Main LR by default."
  • The last pair is also what the USB stick records and what Stereo stream mode sends.
  • Other pairs' defaults: not stated by Allen & Heath. Check them before the show.
  • A monitor mix in the recording: put that output in one of the pairs.

What comes back from the computer (USB returns), fixed:

  • CQ-12T: USB 1-10 to inputs 1-10, 11-12 to ST1 (stereo input 1), 13-14 to the USB L/R input, 15-16 to Bluetooth (BT).
  • CQ-18T: USB 1-16 to inputs 1-16, 17-18 to ST1 (stereo input 1), 19-20 to the USB L/R input, 23-24 to BT. USB 21-22 are not used.
  • CQ-20B: USB 1-16 to inputs 1-16, 17-18 to ST1 (stereo input 1), 19-20 to ST2 (stereo input 2), 21-22 to the USB L/R input, 23-24 to BT.

CQ playback for virtual soundcheck

A virtual soundcheck plays a recorded show back through the mixer's channels, so you can set the mix with no band on stage.

  1. Play the recording from your app, with each track going back on the USB channel it came in on (see the returns in USB routing).
  2. On the CQ, go to CONFIG, then INPUTS.
  3. Select the channels you want. Multi Select picks several at once.
  4. Set Input Source to USB/SD.
  5. To make a played-back channel louder or quieter, use its Trim. The preamp Gain works only on the analog inputs; USB/SD sources get a digital Trim instead.
  6. When you're done, set Input Source back to the analog inputs before the show (our advice).

From the SD card instead: set Input Source to USB/SD as above, then play the multitrack from HOME, then RECORD, then Multitrack. While it plays, the channels take the SD card; otherwise they take USB.

Stereo inputs: Allen & Heath staff say the stereo inputs can also switch to the USB source, from the preamp screen of the channel (in the Complete channel view).

CQ tap points

Check Source Point before you record. Pick the earliest point for a raw recording you can mix later, or a later one for a recording that sounds like the room (our advice). It is on CONFIG, then Digital Audio, then USB/SD.

The tap point is the place in each channel where the recording is taken. Which one to pick, and why, is in Pre or post fader. On the CQ:

  • Faders don't change the recording. Every Source Point is before the fader, users report. That is called pre-fader.
  • One setting for every channel: Source Point, on CONFIG, then Digital Audio, then USB/SD. It covers USB and the SD card.
  • What it does: Allen & Heath: "Choose whether the signal being sent to USB/SD from input channels includes no input channel processing, some processing, or all processing."
  • The option names: Allen & Heath's help pages don't list them. One user on its forum listed them in 2023 as Post Preamp, Post HPF, Post Gate, Post Insert Return, Post EQ, Post Compressor and Post AMM. AMM is the automatic mic mixer.
  • The factory setting: not stated by Allen & Heath. One user found Post AMM on their CQ-20B. Check yours before you record.
  • No post-fader option: users say there's no post-fader option, and we couldn't confirm one. Faders and mutes don't change the recording, one user reports.
  • For a post-fader mix: record the main mix or an output in one of the stereo pairs (see USB routing).
  • Gain is always in the recording. The preamp gain comes before every Source Point, so it changes the recorded level (our reading).
  • Turn off Auto Gain while recording (our advice). Allen & Heath says it can "automatically reduce the preamp gain ... if high levels are detected", which changes the recorded level in the middle of the show.

CQ on Mac, iPad and iPhone

  • Mac: no driver. Plug in, then pick the CQ as the input in your app.
  • iPad: Allen & Heath staff on its forum say it works, because the CQ is class compliant. Set Stream Mode to Multitrack first. One user reports recording a CQ-18 to an iPad in Cubasis. We haven't tested an iPad with a CQ yet.
  • iPhone: Allen & Heath doesn't name it, and we haven't tested one yet.
  • The CQ won't charge your iPad or iPhone. Allen & Heath staff say its USB-A port "is designed only to power a USB drive".
  • Short show: plug the iPad or iPhone straight into the CQ's USB-B port with a USB-C to USB-B cable (our advice).
  • Long show: plug a camera adapter with a power input into the iPad or iPhone, plug its charger into the adapter, then run a USB-A to USB-B cable from the adapter to the CQ, so the iPad charges while it records. Allen & Heath staff suggest the adapter; the cable is our advice.
  • Windows: install Allen & Heath's ASIO driver.

ShowRecorder (the app this site makes) records every USB Channel from any class-compliant mixer. We haven't tested it with a CQ yet. There is no Mixer Link for the CQ: Mixer Link, which reads channel names and colors, works only on the XR18/MR18 and X32/M32. If you record a CQ with it, we'd like to hear how it goes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I record an Allen & Heath CQ to an iPhone or iPad?

An iPad, yes, says Allen & Heath staff: the CQ's USB-B audio interface is class compliant. Set Stream Mode to Multitrack first, or the iPad sees only 2 channels. Allen & Heath doesn't name the iPhone, and we haven't tested either yet.

Why does my CQ show only 2 channels?

Stream Mode is set to Stereo. Go to CONFIG > Digital Audio > USB/SD and set Stream Mode to Multitrack. Stereo sends only one stereo pair, for phones and tablets that can't take more.

How many channels does a CQ send over USB?

The CQ-12T sends 16 channels to the computer and takes 16 back. The CQ-18T sends 24 and takes 22. The CQ-20B sends 24 and takes 24. All three run at 48 or 96 kHz.

Can the CQ multitrack record without a computer?

Yes, to an SD card (SDHC, up to 32 GB, UHS-I, class 10). The CQ-12T records 16 tracks. The CQ-18T and CQ-20B record 24 at 48 kHz, or 16 at 96 kHz. Each track is a mono 24-bit WAV file. A USB stick in the USB-A port records only stereo.

Which USB channel is each input on the CQ?

Mono inputs are fixed: input 1 goes to USB 1, input 7 to USB 7, and so on. The last few USB channels are stereo pairs you choose in CONFIG > Digital Audio > USB/SD > Channel Assignment. The last pair is the main mix (Main LR) out of the box.

Are CQ recordings pre or post fader?

Pre-fader, users report. One setting, Source Point, chooses how much channel processing goes to USB and SD: none, some or all. Users say there's no post-fader option, and we couldn't confirm one. To record a mix after the faders, put Main LR or an output mix in one of the stereo pairs.

How do I play a CQ recording back for a virtual soundcheck?

Go to CONFIG > INPUTS, select the channels, and set Input Source to USB/SD. The channels then play from the computer over USB, or from the SD card while the CQ is playing a multitrack.
